Ruth listened. She looked at Darren’s absence as if absence were a person in the room. “Six months,” she said. “And you let him walk into that.”
“I was going to tell him in the kitchen,” Megan said. “He asked in the doorway. I said not in the doorway. Then Darren came out because I had asked him to look at the disposal and I am an idiot.”
Evan said, “The disposal is not the story.”
“No,” Ruth said. “The story is you were gone and she built a secret with a man who owns a snowblower you used to borrow.” She turned to Evan. “Are you staying in this house tonight.”
