Forty dollars. That was what the argument was about. Not $4,000. Not $400.

Forty dollars. In a hangar with a $60 million jet parked inside it.

In a company that moved more money before nine in the morning than that man made in a year. He had submitted a receipt.

A little one from a supply shop for a part he had bought with his own money three days earlier because the thing it went into needed to work that afternoon, and going through the company’s system would have taken three weeks. The receipt was $40.16. He had even rounded it down. And the CEO stood in the middle of her hangar with a young man in a good suit at her shoulder and said, “You’re getting nothing.”

She explained why, and she was very reasonable about it. No purchase order. No prior approval. New policy.

All vendor expenses required preauthorization. No exceptions. Especially not for people who bought things on their own initiative and handed in receipts afterward. “That’s not how a serious operation runs,” she explained.

“If I make an exception for you, I have to make one for everybody.” Forty dollars. The man in the work jacket looked at her for a second. Then he looked at the young man in the suit.

Then he picked up his bag. “Okay,” he said. “Good luck.” That was it. That was his entire response.

No argument. No, “Do you know how much I’ve done for you people?” No threat. No speech.

Nothing. “Okay. Good luck.” Then he walked toward the hangar door with his bag over his shoulder. But watch the mechanics.

That was the detail. Look at the men in coveralls standing around the edges of the hangar. They had all stopped working. Every single one of them was watching Vern Ashby walk out.

Not one of them looked amused. They looked worried. Their boss did not. She had already turned back to her conversation.

The young man in the suit was writing something down. A small win. Forty dollars recovered. Another line for a slide he was building.
