Jonah’s audition piece was the line from the station, expanded, left hand patient. The panel asked where he had studied. He said a kitchen, a neighbor, a school room on Tuesdays, a station. The panel wrote it down. One of them smiled. The smile was not Allison’s. It was a professional smile, which could still be kind. He got the spot. The money was a separate letter. Renee read the letter at the kitchen window and did the math and then did the laundry overtime and then did the math again. They made the year. The year was bowls and a bus and a practice room and a girl named Priya who said the posture came from expecting to be moved. He told Renee that. Renee said then stand your ground and also let a child sit. He said he had. She said good. Good was salt. They ate.
On a later Saturday, home, he took the train for no reason except the piano. The sign was reprinted. Play if you want. Twenty minutes. Be kind. He was kind. He played twelve minutes. A family stopped. A father opened his mouth and closed it. A girl said he’s good. The father said yeah. Jonah finished and picked up his bag and did not wait to be told he was enough. Enough had been settled. The board said track four, on time. He caught it. South Bend came up. The kitchen smelled like soup. Renee was off. They ate at the table. He did the bowls. The keyboard under the window was silent, resting, a tool between shifts. Outside, no atrium, no tissue paper, no cap. A regular street. A regular night. The notes were already in the day. He did not need to prove them again before bed.
The building superintendent, a man named Ortiz, complained once about the keyboard and then stopped complaining when Jonah helped him carry a refrigerator up the stairs. The refrigerator was a trade, unspoken. Practice before nine. Help when a box needed a second pair of hands. Ortiz told Renee the kid had a work ethic. Renee said he had bowls. Ortiz said same thing. They left it there. Jonah did not know he had been reviewed in a hallway. Reviews in hallways were better than reviews in atriums. They did not come with an audience.
