By morning, the photograph had reached Calvin. He confronted Daniel beside the grill while cooks were preparing breakfast and customers waited for coffee. Calvin's voice carried easily across the room.
'You put my business in danger,' he announced. 'A man and a kid outside, and now somebody is taking pictures. What did you drag here?'
Daniel refused to tell him where Owen and Sophie had gone. Calvin called that insubordination and ordered him to surrender his keys. When Daniel asked for the dismissal in writing, Calvin smiled as though the request were amusing.
'You'll get your paperwork,' he said. 'I've got friends who can make sure of that.'
Daniel placed his apron on the counter. He had been saving for a car repair, and losing the job meant he might not pay rent. Still, he knew what it would cost to give Calvin the address. He walked out while the customers were quiet enough to hear the refrigerators humming.
On the sidewalk stood a black sedan. A younger man in a charcoal suit stepped from the passenger side and approached Daniel with an open hand. He introduced himself as Matthew Ellis, an attorney representing Claire Mercer.
Daniel nearly turned away. Every polished stranger had begun to look like a threat. Matthew anticipated the reaction and held up his phone. Its screen showed a recent photograph of Claire sitting in a hospital room, alive, with a bandage on her temple. A folded newspaper beside her displayed yesterday's date.
'She asked me to find the waiter who helped her family,' Matthew said. 'We've been trying to get them somewhere secure.'
Daniel studied the photograph. He recognized the woman from Owen's briefcase, but he still asked how Matthew knew about the diner. Matthew answered with something only Claire and Owen could know: Sophie had named her knitted rabbit Blueberry, although it was green.
Daniel did not provide the church address. Instead, he called Ruth from his own phone and asked her to have Owen call Matthew through the public number of his law firm. Matthew waited without complaint.
After the call, his expression changed. Claire was due to give a sworn statement that afternoon, but someone had filed an emergency custody petition against Owen, alleging that he had abducted Sophie and endangered her by sleeping outdoors.
Even with all the terrible uncertainty and growing fear surrounding them, Daniel had no idea what the stranger wanted, but at least he had refused to betray the family.
The petition included the very photograph taken outside the diner. Worse, the filing named Daniel as the unidentified man who had supplied the family with 'unknown substances.' Someone was turning his containers of stew into evidence against them.
