Matthew brought Daniel to a legal aid office rather than a police station. There he laid the petition beside the receipts from the diner and explained how quickly an ordinary act could be distorted when powerful people controlled the description.
The photograph showed Daniel kneeling beside Sophie with the thermos. The petition cropped out the open food containers and her father's hand holding a spoon. Daniel's receipt proved he had purchased stew, coffee, rolls, and milk. The timestamp from the register matched the security footage he hoped still existed.
'If Calvin controls the camera, he'll delete it,' Daniel said.
Matthew nodded. 'Then we preserve what other people saw.'
They found two customers who had remained at the counter during closing. One was a retired bus driver named Mrs. Alvarez. The other was a college student who had recorded a short video of the rain against the front windows. In the reflection, Daniel could be seen carrying food toward the door. The student agreed to preserve the original file and provide a statement.
At the church apartment, Owen learned that Claire was alive. His relief arrived so violently he had to sit on the floor. Sophie climbed into his lap, frightened by his tears, until he explained that they were happy tears. She asked whether Mommy would come for her that day. Owen could only say that people were working to make it safe.
Claire's attorney arranged a secure video call. The screen flickered, and there she was. Sophie pressed her palm to the glass as though she might feel her mother's fingers through it. Claire promised she had never stopped trying to get back to them.
Then she spoke privately to Owen and Daniel. The nonprofit's missing residents were not simply invented names. Some were real families who had been pushed out when their buildings were sold, while their signatures continued to appear on grant renewals. Claire had collected ledger entries and copies of forged tenant agreements.
She had hidden the original records in a place connected to the diner because she feared her office computer had been compromised. Her last visit there ended when someone followed her car. She escaped after a collision, helped by a nurse who refused to hand her over to the people claiming to be relatives.
Daniel asked where the records were. Claire looked straight into the camera. 'Your old manager doesn't know what is behind the framed photograph in the hallway. But Grant Vale does.'
That was the reason why no one in that room could afford to let the truth depend on a single photograph.
Daniel pictured Calvin's proud handshake display and realized he might have walked past the evidence hundreds of times.
