The next dispute moved from the diner to county court. Evelyn sought an emergency order protecting financial records and preventing additional transfers of disputed assets. Grant argued that she was confused, manipulated by outsiders, and unable to manage business affairs. His attorney submitted photographs of her hospital stay and a physician's note that had nothing to do with her current capacity.

Evelyn attended the hearing herself. She answered the judge's questions clearly, named the property parcels, and explained the terms of Samuel's trust. An independent physician's evaluation supported her ability to make decisions. The judge did not decide every allegation that morning, but temporarily blocked further transfers of the contested storefront and ordered documents preserved.

Isaiah sat behind Evelyn beside Denise. He watched Grant avoid looking at her. For months, maybe years, the manager had relied on people assuming an elderly woman would defer to the man handling the paperwork. Now every claim required a date, a signature, and a source. Grant's confidence seemed narrower in the bright courtroom light.

Afterward Claire arranged for the ledger and cassette to be digitized under documented handling procedures. The tape contained Samuel's voice reading key account references and warning that the trust's income must remain separated from operating expenses. He did not name Grant as a thief. He could not have predicted everything that followed. But his instructions made it easier for accountants to trace where certain transfers should have gone.

Court officers moved through the hallway with folders pressed to their chests while visitors whispered about parking tickets and custody hearings. Isaiah had imagined justice as a grand room where truth became obvious. Instead he watched clerks check spellings and lawyers request extra days for responses. Evelyn sat straight despite discomfort in her shoulders. She had refused a wheelchair because she preferred to choose when to sit, though she accepted Isaiah's offered arm on the courthouse steps.

After the hearing Evelyn told Claire not to turn Samuel into a prophet. He had been cautious because he knew money could tempt good people and make dishonest people inventive. He did not foresee every scheme. The tape was useful because it recorded procedures and account numbers, not because it contained a magical final answer. Isaiah repeated that distinction when rumors grew online.

Isaiah listened before deciding what to believe. Rosa kept the paper safely folded.

Rosa supplied photographs of the removed surveillance equipment. The technician admitted, through counsel, that Grant had paid him to replace a functioning recorder and take the old unit away. Whether recordings could be recovered was uncertain. Investigators asked the technician to surrender the equipment. Then someone broke into his workshop, leaving expensive tools untouched but taking the recorder itself.
