The investigation widened without becoming a television spectacle. Financial subpoenas reached banks, rental agents, and the companies that had billed Bellweather for repairs. Several owners cooperated immediately. Grant's brother, Patrick Heller, refused to answer detailed questions without counsel. That was his right, Claire told Isaiah, even if it delayed answers everyone wanted.

The recorder surfaced unexpectedly after a teenager found a damaged metal housing near a drainage ditch. Its serial number matched Rosa's photograph. Most of the drive had been exposed to moisture. A technician recovered fragments showing the diner on several ordinary afternoons and part of the morning Evelyn choked. Martha's video remained the clearest record of the rescue. But another fragment captured Grant talking to someone near the counter before Evelyn arrived.

The audio was too weak for certainty. Investigators resisted social media claims that it proved poisoning or an arranged emergency. Isaiah was relieved they did. He had watched a rumor become an accusation once already, directed at him. He would not repeat the injury by assigning guilt without evidence.

At a settlement conference Grant offered Isaiah back pay if he signed a release and agreed never to discuss Bellweather. The payment was far less than the wages he had lost, and the agreement included language suggesting he had admitted to misconduct. Isaiah declined. He was willing to negotiate compensation, but he would not sign an inaccurate account of Evelyn's rescue.

When Grant appeared outside the apartment, Denise watched from an upstairs window. She wanted to demand an apology for every late paycheck, but Isaiah kept his voice level. He asked specific questions, then let silence do the work. Grant's expensive shoes stood in a puddle beside the curb. For the first time he looked like a man without a counter separating him from the people he controlled.

Isaiah wrote down Grant's remark immediately afterward. Claire asked him to preserve the exact wording and avoid filling in what he thought Grant meant. "Ask who gave me permission" could refer to business decisions, legal advice, or something worse. They would follow the records. Isaiah disliked uncertainty, but he had learned the cost of pretending it was already resolved.

Evelyn had learned to ask for documents instead of promises. Isaiah listened before deciding what to believe. Rosa kept the paper safely folded.

That evening Grant came to Denise's apartment building alone. He remained on the public sidewalk and asked to speak with Isaiah. He said people were turning a bookkeeping disagreement into a personal vendetta. Isaiah asked why Samuel's scholarship committee had approved awards that were never paid. Grant stared at the building's dark windows before answering. "You think I invented this?" he said. "Ask who gave me permission."
