"Thank you," he said.

"For what?"

"For making me look at him when I wanted to look away. For the church. For every Thursday I hated and needed."

Ava considered him. The emerald dress was long gone, donated, a costume from a necessary war. What remained was co-parenting calendars and fever nights and the slow construction of a childhood that would not have to begin with a viral aisle.

"Don't thank me for the church," she said. "Thank me for the ordinary days. Those are harder."

Madison married James on a beach at Tybee three years after Savannah's stained-glass afternoon, in bare feet and a simple dress that was not ivory, with Lauren as matron of honor and no infant car seats in the sand. Daniel was not invited, which was correct. Ava sent a small gift and a note that said only May your aisle stay quiet in the best way. Madison kept the note in the same drawer as Ava's first letter. Some archives were for peace, not evidence.

At the reception, James danced with her under string lights while the ocean breathed against the shore. Madison's green eyes were clear. Her brunette waves tasted of salt. She thought, briefly, of a priest's unfinished question and a woman in emerald who had answered it, and she felt — not gratitude exactly, not forgiveness in the soft greeting-card sense — but a hard, adult recognition that the truth, however violently delivered, had saved her from a longer lie.

She kissed her husband. The band played. Somewhere inland, in a different corner of the same coastal city, a little boy named Eli slept in dinosaur pajamas while his mother read and his father, on a midweek evening visit, washed bottles at a sink he was finally allowed to know by heart.
