In the eighth month, Ava's mother flew in from Ohio — a practical woman named Helen who took one look at the situation and said, "That man is going to keep choosing the easier room until someone locks him out of it." Helen helped assemble the crib. Helen sat with Ava through a false-labor scare. Helen met Daniel once, shook his hand without warmth, and told him, "My grandson will know who showed up. Make sure the answer includes you."

Madison's almost-honeymoon tickets to Portugal went unused. The travel insurance covered part of the loss. The emotional insurance did not exist. She donated the luggage tags and the guidebook and kept, for reasons she could not fully explain, a postcard of Lisbon's tiles that Daniel had bought in advance and hidden in a drawer as a surprise. She found it while packing. She stared at the blue geometry of someone else's city and threw the postcard away. Some surprises did not deserve to survive the fire.

Six months after the failed wedding, Madison agreed — against every instinct and after three therapy sessions spent circling the idea — to a mediated conversation with Daniel requested through lawyers. Not reconciliation. Clarification. She wanted answers that the aisle had been too loud to hold.

They met in a neutral office downtown with a mediator named Carol who specialized in high-conflict separations and spoke in the calm cadence of people who had heard worse. Madison wore a charcoal blazer and no jewelry from Daniel. Daniel wore a navy sweater and looked like a man who had lost sleep and privilege in equal measure.

Carol opened notebooks. "Madison has questions. Daniel will answer. Interruptions go through me."

Madison did not waste time.

"When did you know Ava was pregnant?"

"Three weeks after we broke up. She called me. I confirmed with a test after Eli was born, but I believed her from the start."
