He turned the crossword so they could see it. He had filled in nothing. In the margin he had written, in the shaken hand, I signed because I wanted a day that was mine.

He looked at the line as if it had surprised him.

"That's not all of it," he said. "Don't frame it. It's a practice sentence. The real one is uglier. I'll say it in the room where I didn't say it. I owe the mahogany that much. Denise said Thursday. We'll go Thursday. Both of you. If I wobble, you let me wobble. If I say something you hate, you do not correct me in front of the banker. You can correct me in the car until the end of the republic. In the room I get to finish."

Ruth reached across the table and touched the margin, not the words, the paper beside them.

"Okay," she said.

Caleb said, "Okay," and this time the word had a different floor under it.

The days between were not soft. They were careful, which is not the same thing. Luis came back and braced the fascia and trimmed the branch that had been eating the gutter, and the pear tree looked offended and then, by evening, merely itself. Ruth paid him from her own account and did not mention it until Caleb found the receipt and said, "Half," and transferred half before she could argue, a small stubborn fairness. They took Arthur to Shah on Friday. The doctor was a woman with gray at the temples and no interest in being cast as anyone's clipboard. She asked the date. Arthur gave it. She asked him to remember three words. He remembered two and came back for the third five minutes later, pleased with himself, like a man finding a quarter in a coat. She asked him to draw a clock. The numbers were all there. The hands were a little off, ten past ten trying to be ten past eleven, or the reverse. She did not dramatize it.

In the hall afterward she spoke to all three of them, which Ruth noted as a decency.
