"I hear the fact," Arthur said. "I heard it before. Fear is a bad listener. It's listening now. Don't waste it."
Caleb said, "I won't take you to a platform again because the morning is frightening. If you want a bank, we do it like this. In a room. With her in it. Even if you and I are angry. Especially then."
"Good," Arthur said. "Write that on your list under the pharmacy. You love a list."
A small sound came out of Caleb that was almost a laugh and almost not. Denise looked down at her paper with the discretion of a person who knows when a family has briefly remembered it is a family.
"It will take me an hour to prepare the card and the instruction," she said. "You can wait in the lobby or you can come back after lunch. The lobby is kinder than it looks. There's a chair by the ficus that nobody defends."
"We'll wait," Arthur said. "If we leave, someone will talk one of us out of our nerve in a parking lot. I've seen it done. I've done it."
They waited. The lobby ficus was artificial and unashamed. Arthur took the chair. Ruth and Caleb stood, then sat on a bench that was too low, their knees high, like children outside a principal's office. The toddler from the other week was not there. A man argued softly about a fee and then stopped arguing, having been shown a line on a screen. Rain ticked the glass. Ruth watched her father's hands on his knees, the brown spots, the wedding ring he still wore, a dull gold that had outlived the ceremony and the illness and the edits.
"I was afraid of you too," she said to Caleb, quietly, so the lobby would not be asked to participate. "Not of a forgery. Of being unnecessary. March made me necessary on paper. It was a cheap necessity. I took it."
