“I can go outside,” Jonah said.

“You can stay,” Lauren said. “You know it. He should hear it with you in the room so I can’t make it softer than the room.”

She sat. She put her hands around a mug she had not yet filled. The kettle began to talk to itself. Derek remained standing, one shoulder against the doorframe, the navy jacket in his line of sight, and waited for the story that had been walking around his marriage in someone else’s clothes.

She told it without looking at either of them for long. The mug stayed empty. The kettle clicked off and nobody poured.

She had been nineteen, she said, not a child in the eyes of the law and not anything like an adult in the eyes of a Tuesday. His name was Patrick Keene. He worked the summer at the same marina where her father knew everybody, and he had a laugh that made people hand him things. Lauren had a scholarship for the fall, the first in the Brennan house to have one, a state university four hours inland, a future Ruth talked about as if it were a delicate glass already packed. Patrick was not cruel. He was twenty-two and already halfway gone, the kind of young man who treated a summer as a room he did not have to lock when he left. She had liked him with the severity of a person who does not know yet that liking is not a plan.

“I knew before the Fourth of July,” she said. “I waited until August to tell anyone, because I kept thinking the calendar might apologize. It didn’t. I told Ruth. She sat down on the kitchen floor, which scared me more than shouting would have. Howard came in from the yard and saw her on the floor and thought someone had died. In a way she thought someone had. The someone was the version of me she had been describing to her sisters.”
