Outside, Jonah’s cigarette flared and died. Derek looked at the manila envelope and felt the day settle into its real shape. Not an affair. Not a kidnapping. A woman who had been a girl in an impossible kitchen, and a boy who had found the papers, and another boy who had tried to hold a family on the curb by refusing to move. And himself, late, holding a trunk lid, asking why a frightened child was like this.

“Tomorrow,” he said, “you are going to tell me about those fares without turning it into a defense. Tonight you are going to tell Jonah about the money. I’m going to call Denise and tell her the day happened without giving her a vote in it. Then I am going to sleep in Mason’s room on the floor. Not as a punishment. Because he asked me, in so many words, to still be here in the morning, and I want the first thing he sees to match the sentence I gave him.”

Lauren reached across the table and stopped her hand before it touched his. The stopping was more intimate than the touch would have been. “I don’t know how to be forgiven for this.”

“Good,” Derek said. “Neither do I. Let’s not fake the method tonight.”

He went to the porch and told Jonah the couch was his if he wanted it, and that there was a number with his name on it his mother would explain. Jonah said okay. From the driveway Derek called Denise and asked her not to fix anything. He told her Lauren had a son before Mason, that nobody had told him, and that he was still in the house. She was quiet, then said she was here, and that she loved Mason. He said that was the part he was holding. When he hung up, Jonah was at the table reading the statement like a relic instead of a solution.

Derek stayed in the yard until the anger was specific and his. It did not ask him to hit anything. It asked him to stay accurate. He went in and slept on his son’s floor, the navy jacket under his head, and nobody left the house.
