Mara's first court appearance was quieter than the wedding. There were no flowers, no organ, and no row of relatives who had dressed for a celebration. She stood beside her attorney, wearing a plain gray jacket. Charges relating to unlawful restraint and the alleged administration of a sedating substance were proceeding, subject to the evidence and the court's findings. Claire attended with Thomas but left Oliver at school. It mattered to her that her son did not spend childhood watching adults replay the worst day of his life. Mara looked at Claire only once. There was no theatrical plea for forgiveness. Her expression was hollow, almost relieved that someone else now controlled the timetable. Afterward, Ellen asked whether she could speak to Mara privately in detention. Claire said the decision was Ellen's, but she would not be drawn into delivering messages. Ellen went alone. Mara told her she had been promised enough money to settle a debt owed to a private lender. Robert had approached her months before the wedding after learning of her estrangement from Claire. He knew she resembled her twin and could mimic her voice. They had first planned to intercept business calls, not stage a wedding substitution. But after Claire rejected the revised contract, they needed access to her phone on the day of a scheduled authorization call. Mara claimed Robert knew she intended to prevent Claire from attending the church, but she admitted he might not have known the method. Ellen listened, then explained that she would not carry a secret confession into the family. If Mara wished to make a statement, she needed to tell her attorney and investigators truthfully. Mara cried when Ellen stood to leave. 'You always choose Claire,' she said. Ellen turned back. 'I kept choosing your excuses. Look where it brought us.' The meeting ended without reconciliation. The next day Mara's attorney contacted the detective to arrange a recorded statement under appropriate safeguards. Claire did not listen to it. She was busy trying to save the factory. The revised financial plan required bringing in new customers, replacing an unreliable cutter, and finding a lender who would not demand a quick sale as security. Frank introduced Claire to an independent printer in a neighboring town who had spare equipment capacity. They worked out a temporary production-sharing agreement that kept existing orders moving. Thomas was proud of her but frightened of the strain. Claire admitted she sometimes woke convinced the hotel door was locked again. She began seeing a counselor. One evening Oliver found her sitting on the stairs, counting her breaths. He offered her the backpack with the blue stitching.  It mattered to him. 'You can borrow my secret,' he said.
