Ranger remained a complicated question.

Legally, Jenna could have taken him back any time. Practically, the farmhouse still wasn’t secure enough, and Chloe eventually admitted the dog had become attached to Ellie in a way she did not want to disrupt for his sake or the child’s. One Saturday afternoon, she and Jenna came to Ethan’s house with Hope in her car seat and sat at the kitchen table while Ranger slept under it, one paw touching Ellie’s shoe.

“You should keep him,” Chloe said at last.

Ellie gasped so loudly everyone laughed despite themselves.

Ethan looked at Chloe carefully. “Are you sure?”

Chloe nodded. “He was Dad’s dog first. Then he was mine. But he picked his next assignment.” She glanced toward Ellie.

“And maybe part of what he was trying to tell all of us that day is that some things don’t belong where they started.” Jenna wiped at her eye and murmured that Thomas would approve. Ellie slid off her chair and wrapped both arms around Ranger’s neck so hard Ethan had to remind her to go gentle. The dog endured the embrace with the patient dignity of a creature who had, by now, accepted the chaos of human love.

That same month, Ethan finally did something Nora had been telling him to do for years.

He signed up for grief counseling—his own, not the family kind arranged around a crisis. Watching Chloe step painfully toward the truth of her own life had exposed how much of his own sorrow he had simply organized around instead of through. Claire’s death still governed him in invisible ways: his overprotectiveness, his reflex to anticipate disaster, his belief that loving deeply was always followed by losing suddenly. In counseling, he admitted that finding Hope under the leaves had not only terrified him for the child. It had reopened the old wound of how close death can lurk under ordinary afternoons.
