It stepped toward the leaf pile, sniffed furiously, turned its head back toward Ethan, and gave one short sharp bark that sounded less like aggression than instruction. It pawed the ground again. The hair along Ethan’s arms rose. He had grown up around dogs. He knew the difference between defensive barking, territorial barking, and the high wild sound of an animal that has found something wrong and can’t solve the problem itself.

Ellie clung tighter to his jacket.

“Why does he keep looking over there?” she whispered through tears.

Ethan swallowed. “Wait,” he said, more to himself than to her. “He’s not looking at you.” The realization moved through him in a cold line. The dog had rushed in to stop Ellie from stepping closer to the leaf mound. Not because Ellie was the threat. Because something else was there.

He took one careful step sideways, trying to keep both the dog and the pile in view.

The shepherd immediately shifted too, not blocking him this time but angling its body toward the mound as if relieved he was finally moving in the right direction. Ethan glanced back at Ellie, who had one small hand pressed to her mouth now, her crying reduced to trembling breaths. “Stay right there,” he told her. “Do not move unless I tell you.”

“Daddy, don’t go near it,” she said.

His own voice sounded distant to him. “Let me check.”

He approached the leaf pile slowly, aware of the dog’s intense gaze and the small sound of Ellie sniffling behind him. At first all he saw was what he expected: a carefully raked mound of dry maple leaves and some wind-blown extras skittering around the base. Then he noticed that the shape of the pile was wrong on one side, a slight dip as if something broad and low lay underneath the top layer. Ethan crouched, every nerve tuned painfully high. The dog whined once and leaned forward.
