“No. That stays with me unless you ask to see it after you read.”

Rachel made a sound.

Daniel closed his fingers on the envelope and did not tear the flap.

The woman stepped back, one stair down.

“You know who sent me,” she said, not as a question this time.

Daniel looked at the sealed flap.

He did not answer.

Rachel looked at his hands.

Hannah, in the dining room, had gone silent. Ben too. The cake’s candles were out for good now, smoke gone, wax pooled.

The stranger reached the walk.

She did not turn the photograph to the streetlight.

She did not give her own name.

She went toward a car at the curb that Daniel had not noticed, gray like the coat, ordinary.

Daniel stood with the envelope.

Rachel stood with him.

The children stood in the light of a birthday that had become a hall.

He did not open it.

The instruction hung, unmet, still the last speech the stranger had paid them.

Open the envelope before you say that.

He had said that.

The flap stayed shut.

Whatever twenty-two years had kept in drugstore paper and whoever had counted the candles from far away remained on the other side of a seal, and the Mercer dining room, with its long table and its official frames, waited to see whether their father would become a man who lifted a flap at the door or a man who brought a sealed thing to a marriage and asked it to sit down.

They did not go back to the cake as the same four people.

That is the only after the porch would admit. The flap stayed shut. The story stays with the shut flap because the night’s instruction was to open it and the night’s mercy was that the reader, like the children, does not get the inside yet.

Rachel took the envelope from Daniel once they were in the hall with the door closed. She did not open it either. She set it on the console under the mirror where they dropped keys. The white of it looked loud on the wood.

“Upstairs,” she told Hannah and Ben.

“Mom.”

“Upstairs.”
