“It won’t be gone.”

She went. He listened to her in the dining room: plates, foil, the click of the light. The official birthday being packed as leftovers. Hannah’s gifts still wrapped at the end of the table like a joke.

Daniel lifted the envelope an inch and felt the contents shift. More than one page, maybe. A thickness. He set it down as if it were glass.

He walked to the front door and locked it, chain too, a gesture that was late.

He looked through the sidelight. The gray car was gone.

The photograph had left with the woman. He would not see the rest of the sky unless she came back or the envelope held a copy. He was grateful and sick about the gratitude.

Rachel returned. She had taken off the earrings. The burgundy dress was the same. She looked like a woman who had hosted a dinner and then been robbed of the point of the dinner.

“Talk,” she said.

He talked around the hole.

He told her there had been a person before her engagement, not during. He told her there had been a trip and a camera. He told her he had kept a print and then tried to lose it. He told her he had believed the person was gone in the final way. He did not say the name. He did not describe the face. He said the edge of the picture was enough and that was why his mouth had gone stupid.

Rachel listened with her arms crossed.

“Were you going to die without telling me.”

“Yes.”

The yes was ugly and clean.

She nodded as if she had needed that more than comfort.

“We will open it together in the morning,” she said. “Not tonight. I won’t remember how to be a person if we open it tonight. The kids need us to walk upstairs like parents.”

Daniel almost argued. Morning was another kind of cowardice. Morning was also how you keep a twenty-one-year-old from hearing a name through a floor.

“Morning,” he said.

The envelope stayed on the console.

They went upstairs.

They paused at Hannah’s door. Rachel said, “We’ll talk tomorrow. You didn’t do anything.”

Hannah said, “Did Dad?”

Rachel said, “Tomorrow.”

At Ben’s door Ben said, “Is she coming back.”

Daniel said, “No.”

He did not know if that was true.

In their bedroom Rachel changed out of the dress and sat on the bench at the foot of the bed.

“I meant what I said. Together. Morning.”
