The next important encounter happened at a plantation dinner where Nathaniel Cross had been invited weeks earlier, before anyone knew he had found Eleanor Whitcombe. Canceling would advertise fear. Attending might reveal who already knew too much.

So he went.

Eleanor Whitcombe remained hidden nearby with Isaiah Green, while Nathaniel Cross sat beneath chandeliers among planters, attorneys, and merchants discussing crops as if nothing unusual had happened. The conversation turned gradually toward rumors of an impostor woman traveling with a wealthy fool.

No one used his name.

That made it more deliberate.

Nathaniel Cross laughed with them and asked what the impostor supposedly wanted.

One guest said money. Another said revenge. A third, after too much brandy, said, “She wants papers that no longer exist.”

That was the mistake.

Nathaniel Cross asked which papers.

The man froze.

Across the table, Judge Horace Bell's closest associate set down his glass and changed the subject.

By dessert, Nathaniel Cross knew two things. The conspiracy was wider than one household, and they believed the full ledger had already been destroyed.

That meant if the ledger still existed, its value had just doubled.

When Nathaniel Cross left the dinner, a folded note waited beneath his saddle strap.

It contained an address and four words: THE ROOM IS NOT EMPTY.

By dessert, he knew someone at the table recognized the woman’s name. The dinner table was more dangerous than the road because everyone there smiled. Questions arrived disguised as courtesy, and warnings arrived disguised as advice. The hero learned quickly that silence could reveal more than confrontation. The humid night pressed close around the house as everyone weighed what came next. Somewhere beyond the windows, hooves moved on the road and then faded into distance. Still the road ahead held questions that none of them.
