The mark hidden beneath Eleanor Whitcombe's cuff turned out not to be a prison number. It was a reference copied from a document she had seen only once: coded letters, a pocket diary, and a magistrate seal hidden in Eleanor’s torn traveling case.

Nathaniel Cross understood immediately why the captors had searched her clothing but missed the clue. They had expected paper, not memory. Eleanor Whitcombe had written the reference against her own skin with lampblack and grease while left alone for less than a minute.

That small act changed his view of her again. She had not spent captivity waiting passively for rescue. She had been preserving a path back to evidence.

The problem was that the evidence sat somewhere controlled by people loyal to Judge Horace Bell. Reaching it would require either law they could not trust or stealth that could become criminal the moment they were discovered.

Nathaniel Cross preferred law. Eleanor Whitcombe laughed once, without amusement. “Law is what they used to erase me.”

He could not argue.

They compromised. First they would find Isaiah Green. Then they would decide whether the documents could be obtained through a clerk, a witness, or a public demand too visible to suppress.

Before they left, Nathaniel Cross found a fresh horseshoe print near the eastern gate. Whoever had watched the house overnight had already ridden away.

Someone knew where Eleanor Whitcombe was.

The question was whether they could keep it long enough to use it. Proof changed the temperature of the room. Until then, they had only a frightened woman and a dangerous story. Now they had something that could survive denial, ridicule, and the polished voice of a respectable man. Still the road ahead held questions that none of them could answer before morning came again quietly there.
