Silence held for several seconds.

June lowered the marriage license back into the purse as if it had become irrelevant in her hands. “Do you think I don’t know what kind of woman people think I am?” she asked. “Do you think I don’t hear ‘good widow’ and know they also mean interloper? I met him after your marriage was already over. Not happy. Over. If I had thought for one minute he was still building a life with you, I would have walked away.” She paused, then added with more force, “And I did stand by him when he was sick. I bathed him. I signed hospice papers. I slept beside a morphine pump and listened to him call out for his mother in the middle of the night. I won’t be ashamed of that because you were there first.”

Michael felt the truth in both speeches settle like stones.

This was why the whole situation had exhausted him so deeply. Neither woman was entirely wrong. Eleanor’s grievances were decades old, grounded in real sacrifice and fresh humiliation. June’s claim rested on daily caretaking, legal bond, and genuine love. Thomas had failed them both in different ways, leaving the women to collide at the place where public memory demanded singular labels: wife, widow, family.

“He should have fixed this before he died,” Michael said before he could stop himself.

Both women looked at him.

For a strange instant, the old triangle reformed with the absent point suddenly visible. Thomas. The man who had been charismatic enough to inspire devotion and conflict, competent enough to manage units and hopeless enough to leave private emotional logistics for others. Michael laughed once under his breath, without humor. “I’m sorry,” he said. “That sounded disrespectful.”

“No,” June said. “It sounded true.”
