Items Eleanor wanted to take, items June wanted to keep, and items Michael insisted should be copied for everyone. There was surprisingly little conflict about the objects themselves. The deeper tension lay in what the objects proved. Thomas had not discarded his first life when he built the second. He had carried it in boxes, labels, and saved letters, poorly integrated but fiercely retained.

At one point Eleanor lifted a photo of herself and Thomas at a military ball, both impossibly young.

“He looked at me like I had invented electricity,” she said before she could stop herself. The vulnerability of the line startled all three of them. June answered only after a long pause. “He looked at me like relief,” she said. “Not magic. Just relief.”

Michael stood absolutely still.

There, in two sentences, was the clearest account of Thomas he had ever heard. Eleanor had received the man at the start of his ambition, when love still felt like ignition. June had received the man after ambition burned down to embers and what remained was gratitude, compromise, and a gentler dependence. Neither experience invalidated the other. They were simply not the same marriage, and perhaps that had always been the hardest part to accept.

Before Eleanor left that day, June did something Michael never forgot.

She took one of the bundles labeled ELE and held it out. “These should go with you,” she said. “Not because I’m giving back history. Because it’s yours too.” Eleanor hesitated, then accepted the letters without argument. When she spoke, her voice was quieter than usual. “Thank you,” she said. It was the first thank-you Michael had heard her direct at June.
