"Get some sleep."

She picked up her coffee.

"I want you in the main conference room at 9."

Elijah's face tightened.

"Ma'am, 9 is..."

He stopped.

Nine was when he walked Theo to school.

Nine was the reason he had built his life around night work.

Eleanor noticed the hesitation.

"Is that a problem?"

"No, ma'am."

Elijah nodded.

"I'll be there."

He would need to find someone else to walk Theo.

And he already knew exactly what it would cost emotionally to owe that favor.

At 9 the next morning, the second-floor conference room was full.

Dale Croft sat at the head of the long table.

Cold coffee in front of him.

His 12 engineers filled the seats on both sides.

Laptops open.

Reports stacked.

Elijah stood near the door wearing clean gray coveralls.

Nobody had offered him a chair.

Across the room, Priya caught his eye for half a second.

Then looked away.

Eleanor entered last.

She didn't sit.

Instead she walked to the whiteboard and let silence settle across the room for 3 full seconds.

"Elijah."

Everyone looked toward him.

"Come up here."

Eleanor pointed toward the board.

"Show these people what you showed me at 4 this morning."

Elijah walked forward.

Picked up a marker.

His hand was steady.

From memory, he drew the thermal sensor assembly.

Bracket.

Connector.

Signal path.

Then the chain of failure.

Long-term heat fatigue.

Cracked bracket.

Moving sensor block.

Loose connection.

False temperature spikes.

Safety system reading overheating that wasn't happening.

Machine shutdown.

Elijah explained the repair.

The support he had added to the cracked section.

The connector secured back into position.

The room remained completely silent.

Twelve engineers watched a man they had called a janitor explain, clearly and without a wasted word, the problem their entire team had failed to solve in 72 hours.

When Elijah set down the marker, one senior engineer leaned forward.

"You found this by touch?"

"By touch first."

Elijah nodded.

"Then I confirmed it with a meter. The thermal reading was spiking when it shouldn't."

Nobody spoke.

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Two things are going to happen this morning."

She turned toward Elijah.

"First."

A pause.

"Effective today, I'm offering you a position in the engineering division."

A murmur moved around the table.
