“Evening.”

Victoria pointed toward him as though displaying evidence.

“This individual is refusing to leave.”

Damon looked at Jake.

“That is not what happened.”

Victoria cut in.

“He cannot verify that he belongs here.”

“I gave her my name.”

“You gave me a name.”

Damon looked back at her.

“Yes.”

“That is generally how checking reservations works.”

A man sitting near the lounge laughed.

Not kindly.

Victoria heard it.

Her posture sharpened.

“Mr. Morrison, remove him.”

Jake hesitated.

“Has his reservation been checked?”

The question lasted maybe two seconds.

Victoria turned toward him.

“What?”

Jake’s voice became more careful.

“I’m just asking whether the desk verified…”

“I told you he does not belong here.”

Damon watched Jake.

That moment mattered.

Jake knew something was wrong.

He also knew who signed his performance reviews.

Victoria leaned closer.

“Do I need someone else to handle this?”

Jake’s hesitation ended.

He turned toward Damon.

“Sir, I’m going to ask you to step outside while we sort this out.”

Damon stared at him for a moment.

Then nodded.

“I’ll step outside.”

Victoria looked almost disappointed.

Perhaps she had expected resistance.

Damon picked up his backpack.

Before moving, he said:

“I want to be very clear.”

Jake waited.

“I have a confirmed reservation.”

“I have not threatened anyone.”

“I have not raised my voice.”

“I have not violated any posted policy.”

“Correct?”

Jake glanced toward Victoria.

Damon noticed.

Finally Jake said:

“As far as I know.”

“Thank you.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“You are delaying this.”

Damon looked at her.

“No.”

“You are.”

She gestured toward the lobby.

“Other guests should not be forced to watch this disruption.”

Damon glanced around.

Other guests were watching because Victoria had turned the interaction into a performance.

An elderly white couple sat near the fireplace.

A younger man in a tailored suit held his phone slightly raised.

Two women near the elevators whispered to each other.

A Black couple sitting in the lounge were not whispering.

They were watching silently.

The woman’s expression told Damon she understood everything.

Victoria continued.

“People come here for a certain experience.”

Damon asked:

“And I interfere with that experience?”

“You clearly understand what I mean.”

“No.”

“I would like you to say exactly what you mean.”

The lobby became quieter.

Victoria’s face changed.

For the first time, she realized Damon was not embarrassed.

He was observing her.

That unsettled her.

She shifted back toward professional language.

“Your appearance and behavior created concerns about whether you were a legitimate guest.”

Damon looked down at himself.

Black T-shirt.

Dark jeans.

Leather jacket.

Clean sneakers.

“What behavior?”

Victoria stared.

“You arrived without proper luggage.”

“I have a backpack.”

“You came through the front entrance with no vehicle.”

“I used a rideshare.”

“You immediately claimed to have a reservation connected to a major hospitality company.”

“Because I do.”

Victoria gave a short laugh.

“Exactly.”

Damon understood.

The reservation was suspicious because she had already decided the man standing in front of her could not be associated with Washington Hospitality Group.

Every fact passed through the original assumption.
