“No.”
Victoria blinked.
“I’m sorry?”
“There was no misunderstanding.”
“I gave you my name.”
“I gave you the company.”
“I asked you to check the reservation.”
“Your assistant found it.”
“You removed me anyway.”
Victoria looked toward Jake.
As if hoping he would rescue her.
He did not.
She tried again.
“We have security protocols for suspicious activity.”
“What suspicious activity?”
“The situation…”
“Be specific.”
Victoria stopped.
Damon continued.
“What did I do?”
“You arrived…”
“Yes?”
“In very casual clothing.”
“Is that prohibited?”
“No.”
“You had limited luggage.”
“Is that prohibited?”
“No.”
“I arrived by rideshare.”
“Is that prohibited?”
“No.”
“You believed my reservation might not be real.”
“That happens.”
“Yes.”
Damon nodded.
“And what is the procedure when a reservation may not be real?”
Victoria stared.
“Check the reservation system.”
Her voice was almost inaudible.
Damon nodded.
“You did not.”
Victoria’s eyes filled with something between panic and anger.
“I made a judgment call.”
“You did.”
“That is what this investigation will examine.”
Her head snapped up.
“Investigation?”
“Yes.”
“You are being placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately while HR and outside counsel review tonight and prior complaints.”
Victoria’s face hardened.
“You’re suspending me because I didn't recognize you?”
Damon looked at her.
“No.”
“I am suspending you because you refused service to a guest without checking his valid reservation, publicly characterized him as a security concern, and ordered him removed after your own employee apparently confirmed he belonged here.”
Victoria shook her head.
“You came here intentionally dressed like…”
She stopped.
Damon waited.
“Like what?”
Nothing.
“Finish the sentence.”
She could not.
Damon nodded.
“Exactly.”
Regional Vice President Claire Donnelly arrived eleven minutes later.
She came through the side entrance.
One look at Damon and she understood the situation was beyond normal acquisition chaos.
“Mr. Washington.”
“Claire.”
“I’m sorry.”
“We can discuss apologies later.”
Jennifer Martinez joined by secure video from Los Angeles.
Outside counsel joined.
So did Sarah.
Damon refused to hold the conversation in the lobby.
That surprised everyone who had expected some cinematic firing.
He had already been turned into public entertainment once that night.
He was not going to make retaliation entertainment too.
They moved into a conference room.
Victoria sat across from Damon.
Ryan was asked to provide a statement separately.
Jake and Luis too.
Guests who recorded the incident were given contact information if they wished to provide footage.
Nobody was ordered to delete anything.
Nobody was encouraged to post anything.
Damon wanted evidence.
Not a spectacle.
Victoria’s first account began defensively.
She said Damon’s behavior had been “inconsistent with legitimate penthouse clientele.”
Jennifer interrupted from the screen.
“What behavior?”
Victoria repeated the luggage.
Clothing.
Rideshare.
Jennifer asked:
“Would a white guest arriving in jeans with a backpack and a confirmed penthouse reservation normally be removed before the reservation was checked?”
Victoria looked offended.
“That’s hypothetical.”
Jennifer remained calm.
“It is also relevant.”
