At fifty-two years old, after a lifetime spent building professional discipline, she stood beside her own car in handcuffs while strangers watched.

She had been searched by courthouse security thousands of times.

Escorted by U.S. Marshals during high-profile cases.

Threatened in anonymous letters.

Once placed under temporary protection after sentencing a violent trafficking organization.

None of those moments felt like this.

Those threats knew who she was.

This officer had decided who she was without asking.

“Officer,” she said quietly.

Reeves guided her toward his cruiser.

“You are making a serious mistake.”

He smirked.

“Everybody says that.”

Alana stopped walking.

Reeves tugged her arm.

“Keep moving.”

She looked directly at him.

“I need you to listen carefully.”

“I said move.”

“My name is Alana Pierce.”

“I know your name.”

“I am a United States District Judge.”

Reeves stopped.

Not for long.

Half a second.

Maybe less.

But the body camera captured it.

Price looked up from her cruiser.

Sergeant Bell turned completely toward them.

Alana continued.

“I sit on the federal bench for the Western District of Washington.”

Silence spread outward.

Even several people filming reacted.

The woman near the cart return whispered, “Oh, my God.”

Reeves laughed.

Not loudly.

A short, dismissive sound.

“Yeah,” he said. “And I’m the President.”

Price’s face changed immediately.

Sergeant Bell said, “Daniel.”

Reeves ignored him.

“My federal credentials are inside the wallet you took from me.”

He looked down at the wallet still in his other hand.

For the first time, he seemed to remember it contained more than the driver’s license.

Alana said, “The credential is behind my state identification.”

Reeves opened the wallet.

He removed a dark federal identification card.

His expression changed.

There was a gold seal.

A photograph.

A federal judiciary designation.

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT.

ALANA E. PIERCE.

He stared.

Price approached quickly.

“Let me see that.”

Reeves closed the wallet.

“I’ve got it.”

“Daniel.”

“I said I’ve got it.”

Sergeant Bell stepped in now.

“Take the cuffs off.”

Reeves turned.

“We haven’t verified anything.”

Bell’s tone hardened.

“Take the cuffs off while we verify.”

“She could’ve gotten fake credentials.”

Alana stared at him.

Price did too.

Bell said, “Daniel.”

“I’m following procedure.”

“No,” Bell replied. “You’re escalating.”

That sentence would later appear in reports.

For the first time, Reeves looked uncertain.

But he still did not remove the handcuffs.

Instead, he opened the rear door of the cruiser.

“Have a seat.”

Alana remained standing.
