On a quiet Saturday morning in the neighborhood he had worked 22 years to live in, a police officer decided that Raymond Doss didn't belong there.

Officer Kyle Puit saw a black man in old clothes next to a beautiful car and made a decision without calling dispatch, without probable cause, without a single fact to stand on to make Raymond's Saturday into something neither of them would ever forget.

He had no idea that the man washing his Chevelle in that driveway had spent two decades as a detective sergeant for the Garland City Police Department. He had no idea that the worn leather wallet in the back pocket of those paint splattered work pants held a gold shield that was about to end Puit's career, his pension, and his freedom.

He had no idea that what he was about to do in a quiet cul-de-sac on a Saturday morning would dismantle not just himself but the entire network that had protected him for 11 years.

The morning had arrived the way good Saturdays are supposed to, quietly without agenda, without the sharp intrusive bark of an alarm clock or the particular dread that comes from knowing the day belongs to someone else. By 9:30, Cedarwood Heights had settled into its weekend rhythm. Sprinklers ticked across manicured lawns.

The smell of someone's bacon drifted from an open kitchen window two houses down. A pair of mockingbirds argued in the ancient live oak that split the Wills property from the sidewalk.

Their bickering carrying that cheerful indignant quality that made it impossible to take seriously. Somewhere around the bend of the cul-de-sac, a child was attempting to ride a bicycle with training wheels, the aluminum frames scraping the asphalt in unsteady determined arcs. It was the kind of morning that reminded a man of why he worked as hard as he did. Raymond Doss stood in his driveway in a pair of paint splattered work pants that had survived three garage renovation projects, a grass staining incident involving the back fence, and one particularly ill-advised attempt at refinishing hardwood floors. The pants were beyond saving as anything presentable, which made them perfect for the task at hand.
