She drank her coffee. "Your car looks good," she said.
"Thank you," Raymond said. "Took some work to get back to this." It was true in more ways than the literal one, and they both understood that, and neither of them said so directly, because it was the kind of understanding that benefits from being left in the air. The front door opened, and Sandra came out onto the porch carrying a plate of cornbread, warm, judging from the smell of it, the particular warm cornmeal smell that had been moving through the open windows since 7:30, and that Raymond had been aware of the way you are aware of things that belong to the texture of your life. She was barefoot on the porch boards in her Saturday clothes, reading glasses pushed up onto her forehead where they always lived on weekends.
She came down the porch steps and across the yard and handed the plate to Dorothy first, and Dorothy received it with the expression of a woman who has been brought cornbread by Sandra Doss before and knows exactly what that means. The three of them stood together in the April morning in the driveway of the house at the end of Maplewood Court. The sun was fully up now, the light clear and direct falling on the midnight green of the Chevelle with an intensity that made the paint look like something you could reach into. The chrome bumpers reflected the three of them in their curved distorted way. Small rounded versions of Raymond and Sandra and Dorothy compressed into the convex surface of the metal standing together in a driveway on a Saturday morning that belonged to them.
Raymond looked at this car and then at the street and then at the neighborhood around him. In its April presentation, the lawns coming back to green, the oak trees leafed out the particular quality of a Saturday that belonged to the people in it. He had declined the lieutenant promotion a second time. He had accepted the oversight commission chairmanship and had been at it for 5 months. He had already identified eight points in the complaint review process where cases like Puit could have been caught earlier and had submitted formal recommendations on five of them that the board was currently reviewing.
It was not glamorous work. It produced the slow grinding satisfaction of someone who is making something better by increments who knows the increments are real even when they are not visible. Who has decided that this particular work is worth doing because the alternative is to leave the structure as it was and the structure as it was had produced chaos. Zeke asked about the commission. Sandra said he wants to come to the next public meeting.
Tell him to come. Raymond said we need people there. Dorothy finished her cornbread and handed the plate back to Sandra with a thank you that was simple and genuine. She looked at Raymond. The neighborhood feels different this spring.
She said. Raymond looked around Maplewood Court. He considered this honestly. Does it? "Lighter," she said.
