Reads the name.

Then reads it again.

“Malcolm Wright.”

He looks toward the Lamborghini.

“This vehicle is registered to Malcolm Wright.”

He says it as though the name and the car do not belong together.

“Must be nice. What do you do, Malcolm?”

“Government consulting.”

Dutton snorts.

“Government consulting in a $200,000 truck.”

He slowly shakes his head.

“Right.”

Dutton walks back to his cruiser with Malcolm’s documents.

Then comes the wait.

Five minutes.

Malcolm sits still.

Eight minutes.

His hands remain on the steering wheel.

Eleven minutes.

The average traffic stop should not require this long merely to verify clean documents.

Twelve minutes pass before Dutton returns.

Something about him has changed.

His stance is wider.

His hand rests closer to his belt.

His chin is raised.

Whatever he spent those 12 minutes doing in the cruiser, it does not appear to have been ordinary paperwork.

“Mr. Wright, step out of the vehicle.”

“Officer, I’ve provided all my documents. They’re clean. Can you tell me why I need to step out?”

“I’m not going to ask you again.”

Malcolm opens the door.

He steps out slowly with his hands visible.

At his full height, he stands six feet two inches tall.

He wears a navy polo, khakis, and clean sneakers.

He looks like a man going to brunch, not someone standing at a crime scene.

“Hands on the roof.”

Malcolm places his palms flat against the roof of his own Lamborghini.

The vehicle he paid for.

The vehicle registered in his name.

He presses his hands against it like a suspect while an officer who has found nothing illegal stands behind him with one hand near his weapon.

Moore watches from the rear.

She shifts her weight from one foot to the other.

Her body camera captures her glancing toward Dutton, then quickly looking away as though she has seen something she does not want to acknowledge.

Dutton pats Malcolm down.

He checks his sides, waist, and pockets.

Nothing.

No weapon.

No contraband.

Only a wallet, phone, and set of keys with a normal-looking keychain fob attached.

Dutton turns the fob over once, then tosses the keys back onto the driver’s seat.

The keychain appears meaningless.

It is not.

Dutton steps back.

He looks at the car.

Then at Malcolm.

“You’ve got an attitude, you know that?”

Malcolm says nothing.

“Standing there looking at me like you’re somebody.”

Malcolm keeps his palms on the roof and his eyes forward.

His breathing remains steady.

Dutton walks to the passenger side and points through the windshield toward a manila envelope lying on the leather seat.

“What’s in the envelope?”

“Personal documents.”

“Open it.”

“I do not consent to a search of my vehicle, officer.”
