Dutton tries the passenger door.

Locked.

The Lamborghini automatically locked when Malcolm stepped out.

What happens next lasts only seconds, but the consequences will echo much longer.

Dutton pulls his baton.

He steps back.

Then he swings it through the passenger-side window.

The glass does not simply crack.

It collapses inward, scattering fragments across the leather seat, center console, manila envelope, and floor mats.

The sound is sharp.

Then comes silence.

Malcolm closes his eyes.

One second.

Two.

When he opens them, his expression has not changed.

Moore takes a step backward.

Her lips move, but she says nothing.

Her body camera records everything.

Dutton reaches through the broken window and takes the envelope.

Then he walks back toward Malcolm.

He delivers another degrading command, this time laced with unmistakable racial hostility.

Malcolm has already complied with every instruction.

He is already outside the vehicle.

Dutton’s words no longer make tactical sense.

This is not about officer safety anymore.

It is performance.

Dutton has already decided what Malcolm is and is now creating a story to match that decision.

He radios dispatch.

“Dispatch, I’ve got an uncooperative suspect. Possible stolen vehicle. Requesting backup at Brier Creek and Elm.”

Uncooperative.

Malcolm has complied with every instruction.

Possible stolen vehicle.

The registration is in Malcolm’s name and came back clean.

But those are the words that go over the radio.

Those are the words the backup units hear.

Two more cruisers arrive within four minutes.

Sergeant Harold Benson steps out of the first.

He surveys the scene.

A Black man in khakis standing beside a smashed Lamborghini with his hands visible.

Three patrol cars.

Broken glass on the pavement.

Benson looks at the destroyed window.

Then at Dutton.

“You got this handled?”

“Yes, sir. Just waiting on the VIN check.”

Benson nods.

He gets back into his cruiser.

That is the entire conversation.

His officer has just put a baton through a civilian’s car window, and the only question the supervisor asks is whether the situation is under control.

Not what happened.

Not why the window was broken.

Not whether the man standing a short distance from his own house is okay.

Nothing.

Meanwhile, the evidence is already accumulating.

Both Dutton’s and Moore’s body cameras are recording.

The cruiser camera is recording audio.

GPS data shows Malcolm was stopped only three-tenths of a mile from his own house.

Dispatch logs show no stolen-vehicle reports involving a Lamborghini anywhere in the surrounding area.

There was no stolen-car alert.

No weapon.

No contraband.

No outstanding warrant.

Nothing appears to justify what has happened.

Malcolm is placed in the back of Dutton’s cruiser.
