Nobody in the diner said a word.

Brenda clutched a dish towel near the register.

A mother two booths away pulled her daughter closer.

An old man at the counter stared at his eggs like they held the secrets of the universe.

Not one person spoke up.

Malcolm reached into his pocket slowly.

Always slowly.

He pulled out a $20 bill and set it beside his half-eaten pancakes.

Terrence did the same.

They stood.

Malcolm buttoned his jacket one button at a time.

Every movement deliberate.

Controlled.

Hands visible.

No sudden motions.

The choreography Black men sometimes learn before they even learn to drive.

Hutchkins stepped backward and gestured toward the door with his chin.

"After you."

They walked.

Hutchkins behind them.

Lacader behind Hutchkins.

Every eye in the diner tracked them toward the exit.

The bell jingled as they stepped into the bright Saturday sun.

The parking lot was gravel and already hot.

Heat shimmered above the ground.

Hutchkins's patrol car sat in the accessible parking space.

No placard.

No reason.

Just because he could.

"Over here," Hutchkins said, pointing toward the front of the cruiser. "Hands on the hood."

Malcolm stopped.

Turned.

"Sergeant, with respect, what's the legal basis for this detention?"

"The legal basis is I said so. Hands on the hood. Both of you."

Terrence looked toward Malcolm.

Malcolm gave the smallest nod.

They stepped forward and placed their palms flat against the cruiser.

The metal was hot.

Scorching.

Malcolm felt it through his skin.

He didn't flinch.

Hutchkins keyed his radio.

"Dispatch, this is Hutchkins. I'm at Brenda's with two suspicious individuals. Requesting a backup unit to my location."

Suspicious individuals.

That was what they were now.

Two men who had ordered pancakes.

Suspicious.

The dispatcher's voice answered.

"Copy that, Sergeant. Unit en route."

Malcolm's concealed camera recorded everything.

Every word.

Every angle.

Sunlight glinting off Hutchkins's badge.

The way his hand rested against his belt.

The way Lacader stood off to the side staring at the gravel like he wanted to disappear.

Terrence's audio recorder ran from inside his jacket.

Clear.

Timestamped.

Hutchkins walked around to the rental car.

Stopped near the trunk.

Looked at Malcolm.

"Open it."

"Do you have a warrant?"

"I don't need a warrant. Open the trunk or I'll open it myself."

Malcolm reached into his pocket slowly.

Always slowly.

He pressed the key fob.

The trunk clicked.

Hutchkins lifted it.

Inside was a duffel bag.

Laptop case.

Jacket.

Normal travel belongings.

He unzipped the duffel.

Pulled out clothing.

Shook items.

Tossed them back in.

Opened the laptop case.

Rifled through papers.

"What exactly are you looking for, Sergeant?" Malcolm asked.

His voice was calm, but there was an edge beneath it now.

Thin.

Sharp.

"I'll know it when I see it."

Hutchkins found nothing.
