One hand covered her mouth.

Her eyes were wide.

Behind her, faces pressed against the windows.

The whole diner was watching now.

No pretending.

No looking away.

The old man who had spent the confrontation staring down at his eggs stood at the window.

He placed one palm against the glass.

His lips moved.

Malcolm couldn't hear him.

But he could read the words.

About time.

Hutchkins tried again.

Scrambling now.

"I was doing my job. That's all. Just doing my job."

"Your job," Malcolm said, "is to serve and protect."

He stepped closer.

"Not humiliate. Not target people based on race. Not abuse authority because you believe nobody important is watching."

The power dynamic had inverted completely.

"But we were watching, Sergeant."

Malcolm held his gaze.

"We've been watching the complaints around you for three years. Today, you gave us the evidence yourself."

Hutchkins opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

His shoulders sagged.

Lacader finally spoke.

His voice was quiet.

Shaky.

"Sergeant Hutchkins, I think you should stop talking. Maybe call a lawyer."

Hutchkins turned toward him.

"Lacader, you know I'm not... Tell them. Tell them I'm not."

Lacader looked at the ground.

"I can't tell them that, Sergeant."

His voice was almost a whisper.

"I was here. I saw what I saw."

Hutchkins's face crumbled.

Malcolm took out a small rights card.

"Sergeant Dale Hutchkins, at this stage you are being relieved of operational authority pending investigation. You have the right to remain silent and the right to seek legal representation."

He held the card steady.

"Anything you say may become part of administrative or criminal proceedings."

He lowered it.

"Do you understand what I've explained?"

Hutchkins didn't answer.

He stood staring at nothing.

In the distance, vehicles approached.

Two unmarked black sedans pulled into the parking lot.

State vehicles.

No lights.

No theatrics.

Just quiet professional efficiency.

Four investigators in plain clothes stepped out.

Badges visible on their belts.

A gray-haired woman in her 50s approached Malcolm.

"Investigator Owens."

She extended her hand.

"Captain Crawford sends her regards."

Malcolm shook it.

"Appreciate the quick response."

She looked toward Hutchkins.

No satisfaction.

No anger.

Only assessment.

"Sergeant Hutchkins, I'm Agent Marsh with the State Bureau of Professional Standards. You're hereby relieved of active duty pending investigation."

She held out her hand.

"I need your service weapon, your badge, and your department keys."

Hutchkins stood frozen.

"Sergeant," she repeated more firmly. "Your equipment."

His hands shook as he carefully surrendered his duty weapon and belt.

Then his badge.

Then his keys.

Agent Marsh handed everything to another investigator.

"You'll be escorted to the county administration building for formal processing and interview. You are not to interfere with this investigation or leave the jurisdiction without authorization. Do you understand?"

Hutchkins barely nodded.

"Out loud, please."

"I understand," he whispered.

Two agents flanked him and walked him toward one of the sedans.

They opened the rear door.

He climbed inside.

The man who had ordered two Black men out of a diner was now the one being removed from the scene.

The door closed.

The sedan pulled away.

Gravel crunched beneath the tires as it disappeared down Main Street.

Then came silence.

Malcolm stood in the parking lot.

Terrence beside him.
