Neither spoke for a moment.

Then Hannah asked, “Does that mean there’s no future?”

Ethan thought carefully.

“No.”

She looked up.

“It means the future I planned before that night is gone.”

Hannah nodded.

“If we ever build another one, it starts from where we are now.”

Not from who they had pretended to be.

That became their rule.

No old promises.

No assumption that four years together guaranteed another forty.

They rebuilt slowly.

A year after Ethan returned unexpectedly from his parents’ house, he moved back home.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because enough had changed.

Hannah had changed.

Ethan had too.

The first night back felt strange.

His overnight bag sat beside the front door almost exactly where he had dropped it one year earlier.

Hannah noticed.

“So…”

Ethan looked at her.

“Please don’t make a joke about last year.”

“I absolutely was not going to.”

“You were.”

“Maybe.”

He smiled.

Hannah stepped closer.

“Welcome home.”

The words carried much more weight this time.

Ethan looked behind her exaggeratedly.

She stared at him.

“Seriously?”

“I’m checking.”

Hannah laughed despite herself.

“There’s nobody here.”

“Good.”

She wrapped her arms around him.

For a brief moment, Ethan remembered the first homecoming.

Her nightdress.

Her smile.

Ryan in the background.

The sudden coldness in his chest.

The memory would probably never disappear completely.

But it no longer controlled him.

He held Hannah.

“I missed you,” she whispered.

Ethan smiled.

“I missed you too.”

And this time, when he looked over her shoulder, there was nobody sneaking toward the door.

There was only the life they had almost lost.

A life that had survived not because love magically erased betrayal, but because both of them finally understood something they had ignored before.

Coming home was not about walking through the same front door.

It was about knowing the person on the other side had stopped giving you reasons to wonder who might be hiding behind it.
