“And when I walk through the door, he’s sneaking out while you’re dressed like that.”

“I was getting ready for bed.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.”

Hannah stepped closer.

“I didn’t sleep with him.”

Ethan looked directly at her.

“That’s the standard now?”

She froze.

“As long as you stopped before that, I’m supposed to feel better?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly do you want me to feel?”

Hannah had no answer.

Ryan finally spoke.

“This is on me too.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Too?”

Ryan nodded.

“I knew she was upset.”

“About what?”

Hannah looked away.

Ethan noticed.

He turned toward her.

“What were you upset about?”

She stayed silent.

“Hannah.”

“Our relationship.”

The answer caught him off guard.

“What about it?”

She wiped her cheeks.

“You’re never here.”

Ethan stared.

“I was visiting my parents.”

“I don’t mean this week.”

“Then what do you mean?”

“You work constantly.”

Ethan shook his head.

“That’s why you kissed Ryan?”

“No.”

“It sounds like that’s where this speech is going.”

“It isn’t.”

She took a breath.

“For months, I’ve felt like I live with someone who comes home to sleep.”

Ethan’s anger remained, but now confusion joined it.

“You never said that.”

“I did.”

“When?”

“Every time I asked you to come home earlier.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“Every time I asked if we could take a weekend away.”

“I was working.”

“Exactly.”

Ethan looked at her in disbelief.

“So this is my fault.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You’re explaining my schedule while Ryan is standing in our living room trying to sneak out the door.”
