"Now I'm not so sure."

A quiet understanding settled between them.

There was something about that land.

Something someone wanted badly.

Three days later, Elias rode into Silver Creek.

The town was small, but everyone knew everything.

A stranger could arrive in the morning and by afternoon half the county knew their name.

That was how places like Silver Creek survived.

Information was often more valuable than money.

Elias tied his horse outside the general store.

The moment he entered, several men looked up.

"Whittaker."

Elias nodded.

Inside, shelves were filled with canned goods, tools, fabric, and supplies.

Behind the counter stood Caleb Mercer.

Forty-five years old.

Well dressed.

Clean boots.

A polished smile that never reached his eyes.

Mercer owned the largest store in town.

He also owned several properties.

Several businesses.

And according to most people, far too much influence.

"Well," Mercer said.

His smile appeared.

"Elias Whittaker."

"Mercer."

"Don't see you in town much."

"Don't have much reason."

Mercer chuckled.

"Still the same."

"Is that a problem?"

"No."

Mercer leaned against the counter.

"I admire consistency."

Elias said nothing.

Mercer studied him.

"I heard Anna Carter has been struggling."

Elias's expression remained unchanged.

"You hear a lot."

"Town talks."

"Town talks too much."

Mercer smiled again.

"Her farm is finished, unfortunately."

"Is that so?"

"Nothing personal. Business is business."

Elias looked around the store.

"Funny thing about business."

"What?"

"Some men use that word when they mean something else."

The smile disappeared for half a second.

Then Mercer laughed.

"You always were suspicious."

"And you've always given people reasons."

The two men stared at each other.

Neither moved.

Finally, Mercer stepped back.

"Be careful, Elias."

"Of what?"

"Old mountains have old secrets."

Elias felt his body tense.

Only slightly.

But Mercer noticed.

And that told Elias everything.

Mercer knew.

When Elias returned to the cabin, Anna immediately saw something was wrong.

"What happened?"

"Mercer."

Her expression changed.

"What about him?"

"He wants your land."

Anna looked down.

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She looked surprised.

"I didn't know if it was true."

Elias placed his gloves on the table.

"Your father knew something."

Anna looked at the old survey.

"The map."

Elias nodded.

"The map."

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Anna whispered:

"The silver."

Elias looked at her.

She already understood.

"Your father found something," he said.

"Something valuable."

"Yes."

"And Mercer knows."

"Probably."

Anna sat down slowly.

All this time, she had believed her father simply failed.

That he had left her with a dying farm and impossible debts.

Now she wondered if he had been fighting something much bigger.

"My father never cared about money," she said quietly.
