No rage.

No panic.

No loss of control.

Just a terrifying calm.

His eyes had changed.

I knew those eyes.

They were the eyes he had when he was solving a problem.

When the basement flooded during our first winter in the house and everyone else panicked, Daniel had worn that expression while shutting off breakers and tracing water lines.

When his father collapsed at Thanksgiving, Daniel had worn that expression while calling emergency services and keeping everyone else out of the paramedics’ way.

Calm.

Focused.

Several steps ahead.

“You said last night?” he asked.

Ethan brushed potato salad from his pants.

“You heard me.”

“When last night?”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

“What time?”

The question changed something.

Just slightly.

I saw it.

Ethan had been prepared for rage.

He had been prepared for denial.

He had been prepared for accusations.

He had not been prepared for details.

“What difference does that make?”

“You said she was with you.”

“She was.”

“So what time?”

Ethan looked around.

People were listening.

He could not back down now.

“Late.”

“How late?”

“Daniel, come on.”

Daniel tilted his head.

“You were confident ten seconds ago.”

Ethan’s smile returned, but it was weaker.

“After midnight.”

My pulse jumped.

Daniel looked at me.

I did not understand what he was doing.

But there was something in his expression that told me not to speak.

Ethan continued.

“Maybe one. Maybe later.”

“Where?”

Ethan stared.

Daniel repeated the question.

“Where were you with my wife?”

“In my place.”

“Your house?”

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“You seem uncertain.”

“I’m not uncertain.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

Someone behind us whispered, “What is he doing?”

I wondered the same thing.

Ethan glanced toward the door.

For the first time, he seemed to realize the crowd was no longer automatically on his side.

They were watching him now.

Studying him.

Daniel had changed the shape of the confrontation without raising his voice.

“Tell him what she said,” one relative muttered.

“Maybe let them handle this privately,” another answered.

“No.”

Daniel’s voice stopped everyone.

He looked at Ethan.

“He wanted an audience.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“He has one.”

The words made the room feel colder.

I wrapped my arms around myself.

Daniel noticed.

His gaze flicked toward me for only a moment before returning to Ethan.

“How did she get there?”

“What?”

“My wife.”

Daniel spoke slowly.

“How did she get to your house?”

Ethan blinked.

“She drove.”

“Which car?”

A longer pause.

I understood suddenly.

Daniel was not asking questions because he believed Ethan.

He was testing him.

Ethan looked toward me.

I saw calculation.

“Her SUV.”

“What color?”

“Seriously?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Silver.”

My SUV was dark blue.

Several people knew that.

Someone near the doorway shifted.

Ethan heard it.

He recovered quickly.

“Whatever. Blue. It was dark.”

Daniel nodded again.

“What was she wearing?”

“Daniel.”

This time I spoke more firmly.

“You don’t have to do this.”

His face softened for the briefest second.

Then he raised one hand without looking directly at me.

Stop.

The gesture was small.

It hurt more than shouting could have.

I stopped talking.

I told myself he was trying to expose Ethan.
