“She told me she was tired of you. She came to my place. We talked. Things happened. Today she acted like she regretted it. That’s all.”

My hands began shaking.

Not because there was any truth in the story.

Because Ethan sounded convincing.

That was what terrified me.

He had details now.

A sequence.

A motive.

A version of me I did not recognize.

And I finally realized that this was bigger than some ugly joke.

Ethan had planned this.

Maybe for days.

Maybe longer.

Daniel stared at him.

“Finished?”

Ethan shrugged.

“You wanted the truth.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Almost.

“No.”

He lifted the phone.

“I wanted you committed to the lie.”

The expression vanished from Ethan’s face.

Nobody moved.

“What?”

Daniel tapped the screen.

Then he turned the phone toward Ethan.

I was standing at an angle.

All I could see was the glow reflected across Ethan’s face.

But whatever was displayed there changed him instantly.

The color drained from his skin.

His jaw went slack.

His shoulders locked.

His eyes widened.

For the first time that afternoon, Ethan looked genuinely terrified.

Not embarrassed.

Not nervous.

Terrified.

“What…”

His voice cracked.

He cleared his throat.

“What is that?”

Daniel said nothing.

Ethan leaned backward as if distance from the phone could change what he was seeing.

“No.”

A whisper.

Then louder.

“No. Where did you get that?”

Something cold moved through me.

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching Ethan with the same expression he had worn since entering the kitchen.

Patient.

Controlled.

Prepared.

“What is it?” someone asked.

Daniel ignored them.

Ethan looked toward me.

There was fear in his eyes now.

But beneath it was something else.

Recognition.

That frightened me even more.

Because whatever Daniel was showing him connected Ethan to me somehow.

My mouth went dry.

“Daniel.”

He finally looked at me.

“What is on that phone?”

He did not answer.

Not yet.

Instead, he stepped closer to Ethan.

“That,” Daniel said quietly, “is the part you forgot about before you touched her.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

Daniel’s expression did not change.

“I understand exactly what it is.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Then explain it.”

Ethan looked toward the doorway.

No one moved aside.

He looked at me again.

And that was when something inside me shifted.

Until that moment, I had thought I was simply the victim of Ethan’s lie.

Now I was not sure.

Because the way he looked at me was not the way a liar looks at the person he has falsely accused.

It was the way a man looks at someone who is connected to evidence he never expected to exist.

I searched my memory.

Last night.

Dinner.

The documentary.

Daniel asleep beside me.

My phone charging on the kitchen counter.

A message arriving sometime before midnight.

A message I had barely looked at.

An unknown number.

One sentence.

You should ask your husband what he knows.

I had assumed it was spam.

Deleted it.

Forgotten it.

Until now.

My breath stopped.

Daniel saw my face change.

“You remember something,” he said.

It was not a question.

Everyone looked at me.

I could barely speak.

“I got a message.”

“When?”

“Last night.”

Ethan went completely still.

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“What did it say?”

I told him.

For the first time all afternoon, Daniel showed genuine surprise.

Only a flicker.

But I saw it.
