"He's looking at baby pictures with my mother," Daniel said. "She drove over from her place. Sofia's showing him every soccer trophy she's ever won. He might be a while." He hesitated. "Can I sit down?"

Eric thought about it. Then he reached over and unlocked the passenger door. Daniel walked around and got in. The car felt very small with both of them in it.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

"I'm not here to take him," Daniel said finally. "I want you to know that. I don't know what you've been thinking, but I'm not trying to…"

"I know," Eric said.

"He talks about you. Did you know that? Every other sentence. My dad says this. My dad and I built that. My dad taught me to drive stick in a parking lot at the Superstition Springs mall." Daniel looked at his hands. "He told me about the solar oven. The pizza box. He said you stayed up till two in the morning with him gluing tinfoil."

"It was three," Eric said. "And we ran out of glue and had to use duct tape."
