“Draining it?”

“Yes.”

“Even after we used it all summer.”

Officer Chen said:

“She is allowed to perform maintenance on her own pool.”

Sandra stared.

“So that's it?”

Martinez answered:

“As a law-enforcement matter concerning ownership, yes.”

“If you believe you have some legal ownership interest, you may speak with a civil attorney.”

“But based on what we have reviewed here, we do not see evidence that the pool belongs to you.”

Sandra laughed once.

Disbelieving.

“You're taking her side.”

“No.”

Martinez said.

“We're looking at evidence.”

That sentence was the entire story.

Sandra had brought police because she believed authority would convert her belief into fact.

Instead, authority asked for evidence.

And evidence was not sentimental.

It did not care that her children loved the pool.

It did not care that she had bought inflatable flamingos.

It did not care that she had used it fifty times.

It asked:

Who owns the property?

Who paid?

What permission existed?

Was permission withdrawn?

What happened afterward?

Those questions had answers.

Officer Martinez turned toward me.

“You're not required to refill the pool because Ms. Fielding wants access.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

She smiled slightly.

“I assumed.”

The officers left fifteen minutes later.

Sandra did not say goodbye.

She walked next door.

Closed her door.

I stood at the kitchen window.

The police cruiser pulled away.

The empty pool sat pale beneath the September sun.

For the first time in months, I felt no need to look toward the eastern fence.

I sat at the kitchen table.

Then called Diana.

Her first words after hearing the story were:

“She told police your pool belonged to her?”

“Yes.”

“Actually hers?”

“Yes.”

Diana was silent for three seconds.

“That is new.”

“I thought you might appreciate it.”

“I appreciate nothing about this.”

She requested the new incident number.

The next day, she sent Sandra a formal attorney letter.

The letter summarized:

Original permission.

Revocation.

Certified receipt.

Unauthorized entries.

Fence damage.

Prior police warning.

Current false ownership allegation.

It instructed Sandra to cease all claims of access.

No entry.

No interference with fence.

No contact concerning pool use except through counsel.

Any future unauthorized entry would result in civil action and immediate law-enforcement contact.

Diana did not accuse Sandra of fraud.

Did not threaten impossible damages.

Did not insult her.

The letter simply removed ambiguity.

Sandra did not respond.

Winter came.

The pool remained empty until scheduled winterization work finished.

Contractors completed the surface repairs.

I covered it appropriately once service was done.

The eastern fence stayed untouched.

No more cameras triggering at midnight.

No wet towels.

No mysterious chlorine consumption.

No strangers in my backyard.

At first, I still checked the camera notifications obsessively.

Habit.

Then less.

By December, almost never.

Spring arrived.

April.

Aqua Design’s service team reopened the pool.

Refill.

Chemical balance.

Equipment start.

Tile cleaning.

Inspection.

Fresh blue water gradually climbed the walls.

I stood on the patio watching.

Carlos, the technician who had serviced the pool for years, looked toward Sandra’s house.

“Neighbor problem done?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He checked the pump pressure.

Then:

“She really called police because you drained it?”

“Yes.”

Carlos shook his head.

“People are interesting.”

“That is one word.”

That summer felt different.

The first Saturday warm enough to swim, I sat on the steps in the shallow end for almost an hour.

No music.

No guests.

Just water.

For two years, every sound near the fence had changed my attention.

A gate click.

A child laughing next door.

A board creaking.
