Not beside each other.
Sarah chose the chair opposite the couch.
That was when the final uncertainty disappeared.
She pulled her knees against her chest.
“Liam.”
I waited.
“We need to talk.”
I almost laughed.
Instead, I nodded.
She took a long breath.
“I love you.”
There was a moment where hope still reacted automatically.
Then:
“I love you so much.”
I knew what came next.
“You’re my best friend.”
There it was.
“My person.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“But I feel like something changed.”
I said nothing.
“We’ve gotten…”
She searched.
“Comfortable.”
I almost smiled.
Comfortable.
The word sounded like an accusation.
“We’re like roommates sometimes.”
Still nothing.
“And I’ve been thinking a lot.”
I looked at her.
“And talking to Mark.”
Finally.
Her face tightened.
“Not like that.”
I almost asked what like that meant.
She continued quickly.
“He understands something about me.”
“He challenges me.”
“He makes me feel…”
Sarah stopped.
“What?”
I asked.
“Alive.”
That one landed.
Five years reduced to something dead.
I kept my voice level.
“So what are you saying?”
“I don’t know.”
“You do.”
She cried harder.
“I think I need to know whether this connection is real.”
“With Mark.”
“Yes.”
The word was barely audible.
I looked at her.
“How long have you felt this way?”
“I don’t know.”
“How long?”
“A couple months.”
“Have you told him?”
Sarah hesitated.
That answer was enough.
“What have you told him?”
“We’ve talked.”
“About us?”
“Sometimes.”
“About your feelings?”
Silence.
“Sarah.”
“Yes.”
I nodded slowly.
That was the moment I stopped calling it confusion.
“You’ve been having an emotional affair.”
“No.”
Her reaction came instantly.
“We haven’t done anything.”
“You told another man you have feelings for him while you were still living with me.”
“It’s more complicated.”
“It usually is when someone needs the wording to save them.”
Sarah wiped her face.
“I didn’t plan this.”
“I believe you.”
That seemed to hurt her more.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“Also probably true.”
“Liam.”
“What do you want?”
She looked at me.
That question finally brought the rehearsed answer.
“I need to explore this.”
“The connection with him.”
“Yes.”
“And what happens to us?”
Sarah’s face crumpled.
“That’s the part killing me.”
I felt almost detached.
“Answer.”
“I don’t want to lose you.”
I stared.
“You are choosing another man.”
“I’m choosing clarity.”
“No.”
My voice stayed quiet.
“You’re choosing another man.”
She looked away.
I continued.
“That doesn’t make you evil.”
“But we should at least be honest.”
