“I don’t know if Mark and I would even work.”

That sentence contained the truth.

Sarah was not walking away because she knew Mark was her future.

She wanted permission to test him without fully releasing me.

“What happens if it doesn’t?”

She looked back.

“I don’t know.”

“Yes, you do.”

“Liam, please.”

“What are you asking?”

She inhaled.

“I’m asking if we have to lose everything.”

I waited.

“We’ve been in each other’s lives for five years.”

“Yes.”

“You’re my best friend.”

I almost knew the sentence before she said it.

“I need to explore this connection with him.”

She wiped another tear.

“But can we still be best friends?”

Silence.

Not dramatic silence.

The refrigerator still hummed.

A car passed outside.

Somebody upstairs dropped something heavy.

But inside me, every moving piece stopped.

That was the moment.

Not Mark.

Not the emotional affair.

Not even the breakup.

That request.

Sarah wanted to transfer me to another department of her life.

Boyfriend removed.

Emotional support retained.

She wanted Mark for possibility.

Me for certainty.

She wanted freedom from responsibility while preserving access to everything comforting about our relationship.

I looked at her.

For the first time that evening, I understood completely.

She had made her decision.

Now I needed to make mine.

“Okay.”

Sarah blinked.

“What?”

“Okay.”

I stood.

Her face changed.

“Okay what?”

But I was already walking toward the bedroom.

“Liam.”

I closed the door.

Not slammed.

Closed.

I stood there.

My heart hammered.

My hands felt numb.

On the other side, Sarah cried.

A minute later, soft knocking.

“Liam?”

I did not answer.

“Please.”

More silence.

“Can we finish talking?”

There was nothing left to finish.

She had told me what she wanted.

I had finally listened.

Her footsteps moved away.

Then I heard her phone.

A quiet conversation.

I could not make out every word.

I heard:

I told him.

Then:

No, he didn’t yell.

Then:

I don’t know.

Mark.

Of course.

That erased whatever doubt remained.

I opened the closet.

Two suitcases.

That was enough.

The apartment was Sarah’s.

She had rented it before we met.

I had moved in two years earlier.

Most furniture belonged to her.

That simplified everything.

I packed methodically.

Work clothes.

Jeans.

T-shirts.

Shoes.

The navy sweater my mother bought me.

The ugly hoodie Jake gave me as a joke that somehow became my favorite.

I went into the bathroom.

Toothbrush.

Razor.

Medication.

Shaving kit.

The bottle of cologne Sarah had bought for Christmas stayed for several seconds in my hand.

Then I packed it.

It was mine.

Memory did not change ownership.

I left anything shared.

Towels.

Kitchen items.

Blankets.

Decorations.

I did not want an argument later over a blender.
