Marcus was simply Marcus again.

Thomas stopped at the bottom of the steps.

"Chief Reed."

Marcus looked up.

"Marcus is fine tonight."

Thomas nodded awkwardly.

"I think you need to see something."

He held out the folder.

Marcus did not take it immediately.

"What is it?"

"HOA records."

Thomas swallowed.

"Emails. Group messages. Complaint logs."

Marcus studied his face.

"About today?"

"About years."

That changed everything.

Marcus stood.

Thomas handed him the folder.

"I should have stopped it."

Marcus opened the first page.

Screenshots.

Dates.

Names.

Descriptions of adult workers.

Guests.

Contractors.

Caregivers.

People visiting properties.

Suspicious.

Doesn't look familiar.

Verify vehicle.

Does anyone know why this person is here?

Marcus turned another page.

Then another.

His expression grew heavier.

"Did the board authorize this?"

"No."

"Did anyone challenge it?"

Thomas looked toward the ground.

"Sometimes."

"And the rest?"

Thomas was silent.

Marcus closed the folder.

"That answer matters."

"I know."

Thomas finally looked at him.

"We told ourselves Susan was difficult. That arguing with her made everything worse. So we ignored her."

Marcus waited.

Thomas's voice dropped.

"And ignoring her made it easier for her."

Marcus looked toward Susan's house.

No lights were visible in the front room.

"You need to give these to the investigating officers."

"I already made a copy for Sergeant Collins."

"Good."

Thomas hesitated.

"I am sorry."

Marcus nodded once.

Not absolution.

Acknowledgment.

"Then do something useful with being sorry."

Thomas understood.

The investigation moved quickly after that.

Helen's camera provided an uninterrupted view of the confrontation.

It showed Susan crossing onto Marcus's property.

It showed Marcus carrying boxes.

It showed the hose coming up and Marcus turning away to protect the carton marked FAMILY.

The 911 recording provided the other half.

Susan's frightened voice described aggression the video did not show.

She suggested a possible weapon without ever seeing one.

She described Marcus as refusing to leave a vacant property while footage showed him repeatedly entering the house with his own key.

The evidence did not need Marcus's badge.

That mattered to him.

Within days, Susan faced formal legal consequences connected to the false report and damaged property.

Marcus refused every invitation to comment on what punishment he believed she deserved.

"I am involved," he told the city manager. "That means I should not decide her outcome."

He formally recused himself from decisions involving the case.

Then Cedar Ridge held an emergency HOA meeting.

The community room was packed with adult homeowners.
