Claire Elizabeth Harlan knew he knew the moment he came in from the garage. She knew it the way she had always known when he'd had a bad phone call or when one of his men had been hurt. His face went still and smooth, like a lake that has frozen in the night. He kissed the top of Owen's head where the boy sat over his cereal. He poured himself coffee from the pot she had made at four-thirty, having given up on sleep. He didn't look at her. He asked Owen whether the bus still came at seven-fifty, and Owen said it did, and Daniel said he would walk him to the corner. They went out together, the boy's backpack bouncing, the green hood up against the morning chill, and she watched through the front window as her husband stood at the bus stop with the other parents. He shook Bill Pruitt's hand. He let two mothers hug him. He stood with one hand on their son's shoulder until the bus came, and then he stood alone at the corner with his hands in his pockets for a long time after it had gone.

When he came back in he set something on the kitchen counter in front of her. It was the challenge coin. He didn't say anything. He didn't have to. She looked at it and then at him, and she understood that Owen had shown him the box. She had forgotten about the box. Of all the things she had scrubbed and stripped and bagged and hidden in an hour and twenty minutes, she had forgotten her son's treasure box.

She told him everything then. It took most of the morning.

She would wonder, later, what she had wanted when she told it. Not forgiveness, she thought, or not only. She wanted it to be said once, completely, in the right order, by the person who had done it, so that whatever came after would at least be built on something true. She owed him that. She found she owed it to herself too, though that was harder to admit.
