Daniel sat across from her through all of it. He didn't interrupt. Twice he got up and walked to the window and stood there with his back to her and then came back and sat down. When she was done he was quiet for so long that she could hear the clock over the stove. Then he got up, took his truck keys off the hook by the garage door, and asked her for Caleb's address.

She gave it to him. She had been afraid of this since yesterday. She found, now that it had come, that she trusted him. Maybe she had always trusted him and the fear had been something else, her own guilt, needing him to be dangerous so that she would have a reason. She gave him the address and told him the apartment number, and that the door was around the side, up the metal stairs, past the tire shop.

He nodded. He went out. She heard the truck start in the driveway, and back out, and drive away, and she put her head down on the kitchen table, on her folded arms, and stayed there until the sound was gone.
