“For Vanessa too.”

“She should have considered that.”

“The money wasn't disappearing.”

“Then where was it going?”

“Into an asset.”

“Your asset.”

“Our project.”

“Don't say our.”

He paused.

“Vanessa was going to have equity.”

“How much?”

“That isn't relevant.”

“Then I'll ask differently. How much of the company does Vanessa own right now?”

No answer.

“Exactly.”

“You don't understand the structure.”

“Send me the operating agreement.”

“What?”

“The document showing Vanessa’s ownership.”

“This isn't a negotiation.”

“No, Adrian. It's a fraud review.”

The confidence disappeared from his voice.

“Be careful throwing that word around.”

“You used my personal information in a credit application I did not authorize.”

“Vanessa told me you were on board.”

That sentence confirmed what I expected.

They were already preparing to blame each other.

“Then talk to Vanessa.”

“I am trying to keep this from becoming bigger than it needs to be.”

“Too late.”

“You want to destroy her because your feelings got hurt?”

I gripped the steering wheel.

For a moment, Adrian almost succeeded.

Almost.

Then I heard Miriam's voice in my head.

Do not turn this into punishment.

I spoke slowly.

“My marriage is separate from the loan.”

“Doesn't sound like it.”

“It is to me.”

“You think you're better than everyone because you stay calm?”

“No.”

I looked through the windshield.

“I think calm people make fewer expensive mistakes.”

I ended the call.

Two days later Vanessa asked to meet.

Not at the house.

Not at my brother’s.

A diner near Bloomfield Avenue where we used to eat breakfast after buying the house.

I almost refused.

Miriam told me I could go if I wanted to.

“Keep the conversation about the relationship. No negotiations about property. No agreements. No promises.”

Vanessa was already sitting in a booth when I arrived.

She looked exhausted.

No makeup.

Hair tied back.

Black sweater.

For years I had thought Vanessa was most beautiful when she wasn't trying to impress anyone.

That thought still arrived automatically.

Then reality followed it.

She stood when she saw me.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

Neither of us knew whether to hug.

We didn't.

I sat across from her.

Coffee waited in front of me.

“You ordered for me.”

“Black. No sugar.”

“Nine years is good for something.”

Her smile collapsed almost immediately.

For a minute, we said nothing.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Adrian won't answer me.”

I looked at her.

“Since when?”

“Yesterday.”

“That surprises you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She frowned.

“I don't need you to make me feel stupid.”

“I wasn't.”

“You were thinking it.”

“I was thinking he called me before he stopped answering you.”

Her face changed.

“When?”

“Tuesday.”

“What did he say?”

“That you told him I approved the loan.”

Vanessa looked down.
