Years later, she told me something different.

“I cried because I finally knew nobody could tell us to leave.”

That mattered to her.

Which was why what she did later was so hard for me to understand.

For most of our marriage, Adrian Voss was just a name from her past.

I knew they had dated.

Two years.

College and a year afterward.

Vanessa rarely spoke about him.

When she did, her stories had a strange mixture of irritation and nostalgia.

Adrian was exciting.

Adrian knew everyone.

Adrian always had a plan.

Adrian could talk himself into restaurants without reservations and clubs without invitations.

He once convinced Vanessa to take a train to Montreal with him because they had nothing else to do that weekend.

They had no hotel booked.

No itinerary.

Barely enough money.

Vanessa laughed when she told me that story.

Then she added, “I would never do something that stupid now.”

At the time, I didn’t feel threatened.

Adrian was history.

I was her husband.

Then, in October, Adrian Voss appeared on her phone.

1:18 a.m.

I remember the time because I had been awake.

Vanessa’s phone vibrated on the nightstand.

The screen lit the room.

ADRIAN VOSS.

She grabbed it quickly.

Too quickly.

“Who’s Adrian?”

She looked at the screen.

“An old friend.”

“Your ex?”

She hesitated.

“Yeah.”

“At one in the morning?”

“He’s probably drunk.”

She declined the call.

Then turned the phone facedown.

I waited.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“That’s it?”

“What?”

“No explanation?”

She sighed.

“Daniel, he’s an ex-boyfriend. He called. I didn’t answer. What exactly do you want me to explain?”

“Why he's calling after one in the morning would be a start.”

“I don’t know.”

“Has he called before?”

Her jaw tightened.

“You’re doing that thing.”

“What thing?”

“Interrogating me.”

“I asked two questions.”

“You make everything sound like an investigation.”

I stared at her.

Then I laughed slightly.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Say it.”

“I work in cybersecurity, Vanessa. Asking why a man is calling my wife after midnight isn't an investigation.”

“He saw one of my campaigns online and messaged me. That’s all.”

“Okay.”

She rolled over.

Conversation finished.

The next morning, Adrian’s call was gone from her recent history.

I noticed because Vanessa asked me to call the plumber from her phone while she was in the shower.

I wasn’t looking for Adrian.

I simply remembered where his name had been.

It wasn’t there.

That was the first moment something inside me shifted.

Not because she had spoken to an ex.

Adults have pasts.

People reconnect.

Sometimes it means nothing.

The deletion meant something.

I said nothing.

Two weeks later, Vanessa started having more “client dinners.”

Then came the girls’ nights.

Jersey City.

Manhattan.

Brooklyn.

She bought new clothes.

Changed perfumes.

Started going to a gym near her office instead of the one six minutes from our house.

Any single change meant nothing.

Together, they made a pattern.

I eventually asked.

“Are you seeing Adrian?”

She stared at me across the breakfast table.
