Every affair begins with somebody offering language that makes selfishness sound like healing.

"He kissed you?"

"Yes."

"Did you stop him?"

Another pause.

"No."

"Did you kiss him back?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"I don't know."

"Then what?"

"I went upstairs."

"To me."

"Yes."

"And told me your afternoon was boring."

She started crying again.

I felt strangely calm.

"What happened last night?"

"We texted."

"Show me."

Her head snapped up.

"What?"

"Your phone."

"Adam."

"Show me."

She stared.

That was enough.

I stood.

"You deleted them."

"No."

"Then show me."

She reached for her phone slowly.

Unlocked it.

Held it.

Didn't hand it over.

I watched her.

"Lauren."

"I deleted some."

I nodded.

"How many?"

"I don't know."

"You deleted the conversation."

"Most of it."

"When?"

"This morning."

"Before we went to the beach?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I felt guilty."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You deleted it because you didn't want me to see it."

She flinched.

"That's the same thing."

"It isn't."

I sat back down.

"Did you meet him intentionally last night?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Lobby bar."

"What time?"

"Around eleven."

"How long?"

"Maybe forty minutes."

"Did you kiss him again?"

"Yes."

"Anything else?"

"No."

"Did you go to his room?"

"No."

"Did he come here?"

"No."

"Did you touch him sexually?"

"No."

"Did he touch you?"

She looked away.

That was the moment I stopped needing details.

"Enough."

She looked back.

"Adam, I didn't sleep with him."

I stared at her.

She sounded like she believed this distinction should save something.

I said:

"You lied about being separated."

"You kissed him."

"You hid it."

"You met him again."

"You deleted the messages."

"And today you invited him back into our space while I was standing twenty yards away buying you water."

"I didn't invite him."

"He happened to appear with yesterday's sunscreen knowledge?"

She closed her eyes.

"He texted asking where I was."

"So you told him."

"Yes."

"And then let him rub sunscreen on you."

"It sounds worse when you say it like that."

I almost laughed.

"That's because it was worse when you did it."

She stood.

"I know I messed up."

"No."

"What?"

"You keep calling this a mistake."

I said.

"A mistake is putting regular gas into a diesel truck."

"This took decisions."

"You talked."

"Flirted."

"Lied."

"Kissed."

Texted.

Deleted.

Met again.

Then continued today.
