She waited. “He doesn’t want to answer yet.” Lauren nodded and swallowed. “Okay.”

Emma looked up from her drawing. “Can I give him this?” Michael walked over. The paper showed five stick figures under a pink banner.

All five were holding hands. Above them, in uneven purple letters, Emma had written MY WHOLE FAMILY. Michael had to look away for a second. “Yes,” he said.

“I’ll give it to him.” Lauren covered her mouth. Michael turned toward her. “We need to talk.”

“I know.” They moved into the living room. For the first time in their nineteen-year relationship, Michael was afraid that love might not be enough to preserve the marriage. The fear did not come from one cruel sentence alone.

It came from what the sentence exposed. “How long have you been making distinctions like that in your head?” he asked. Lauren did not pretend not to understand.

“I don’t know,” she said. “That’s not good enough.” “I know.” He leaned forward, elbows on knees.

“Did you ever not think of him as your son?” “No.” The answer came instantly. “Never.”

“Then explain what happened.” Lauren inhaled shakily. “I think I let myself believe there were two things that could be true at once: Elijah was completely our son, and there was still some separate biological version of our family that was allowed to exist in pictures or genealogy or whatever. I never called it a hierarchy; I told myself it was just categories.” Michael’s expression hardened.

“Categories become hierarchies when one kid is the one asked to step out.” “I know that now.” “You should have known it then.” Lauren lowered her eyes.

“Yes.” There was no useful defense left, and both of them knew it. Michael told her what Elijah had said at the diner—the smaller incidents, the phrases, the doctor’s office, Patricia’s comments. Lauren listened with tears standing in her eyes.
