Dr. Brooks suggested she not turn the video into punishment, but she also said Lauren could decide whether remembering accurately served a purpose. Lauren moved the clip into a private folder and stopped watching it compulsively. She no longer needed to reopen the wound to believe it existed.
Emma, however, remembered the birthday differently. For months she associated her eighth birthday with the image of Elijah leaving through the front door. Her parents noticed she stopped asking to see pictures from the party. In therapy, Dr.
Brooks explained that children sometimes absorb guilt for conflict that happens around their milestones. So Lauren and Michael made a point of telling Emma repeatedly that she had done nothing wrong and that her birthday had not caused the family problem. Emma seemed to understand intellectually before she felt it emotionally. In March, she proposed a solution.
They were sitting at dinner when Emma said, “I want a new family picture.” Lauren’s fork stopped halfway to her mouth. Michael asked, “For what?” “For nothing. Just because.”
Sophie immediately understood. “All five?” Emma rolled her eyes. “Obviously.”
Nobody looked at Elijah at first, which he appreciated. Then Michael asked, “What do you think?” Elijah chewed slowly. “Do I have to wear something nice?”
Emma groaned. “That’s not the point.” He smiled. “Then sure.”
They chose a Sunday afternoon in April. No banner. No balloons. No party clothes.
Michael set the phone on a tripod in the backyard because Emma wanted the maple tree behind them. Lauren wore jeans and a blue sweater. Sophie showed up in sneakers. Elijah wore the same olive hoodie from the birthday because he thought the irony was funny.
Emma stood in the middle holding everyone’s hands. When the timer flashed, nobody arranged themselves perfectly. Michael was looking at Emma. Sophie was laughing at something Elijah had whispered.
Lauren’s hair blew across her cheek. Elijah was half smiling, one shoulder angled toward Michael. The photo was imperfect. Lauren loved it immediately.
