Margaret insisted she could manage alone. Rebecca, now pregnant, disagreed. Claire took a week off and traveled home. Jack wanted to join for the weekend, but his own mother’s birthday fell on the same dates.
For once they did not turn conflicting family obligations into a referendum on love. Jack went to Pittsburgh. Claire stayed with Margaret. They called at night and compared mothers.
Evelyn Mercer, hearing Claire was absent because of surgery, packed homemade cookies into a tin for Jack to mail. Margaret Bennett, recovering with one arm stiff from the procedure, sent back a handwritten note saying anyone who raised a man willing to lie to an airline employee for a stranger had complicated morals but good instincts. The mothers began corresponding after that. Claire and Jack discovered this only when both women referenced the same recipe on separate phone calls.
“This feels dangerous,” Claire said. “Extremely.” By autumn, the question of the future arrived whether they invited it or not.
Long distance can be sustainable when it has an end point. Without one, every goodbye starts collecting resentment. Claire’s Chicago work was expanding. Jack’s Boston office had given him a project role he loved. Neither could plausibly move immediately without giving something up.
They discussed New York first because it was where they met and where both had professional connections.
Claire disliked the idea of returning too quickly to a city she associated with her old job. Jack worried a New York move would pull him back toward commercial architecture because civic firms there were harder to enter. Chicago offered Jack fewer direct opportunities. Boston offered Claire less editorial photography work than she wanted.
For the first time, love presented not a romantic obstacle but a strategic one. At Thanksgiving, Claire visited Pittsburgh with Jack. Meeting Daniel Mercer terrified her more than she admitted. Jack’s father was sixty, broad-shouldered, silver at the temples, and carried authority even while carving turkey. He welcomed Claire politely and then spent dinner asking questions that sounded conversational but landed like inspections.
